Are You Marketing,
or Just Advertising?

Marketing and advertising aren't the same thing. In fact, advertising is just one part of marketing. Here is a brief definition of each:

Advertising: The nonpersonal presentation or promotion by a firm of its products to its existing and potential customers. Advertising is a short-term exercise.

Marketing: The systematic planning and implementation of a variety of business activities intended to bring together buyers and sellers. Marketing is a long-term endeavor.

Marketing is an ongoing and interactive process that consists of everything a business does to build a positive relationship with the consumer. It is made up of all the actions you take to reach and persuade your prospects that you have the products and services they need. Marketing consists of advertising, public relations, direct mail, and more customer contacts. It encompasses the big picture of your business and how it will succeed rather than simply the immediate result of a particular action. A good marketing plan should allow you to position your business over time so that you build a favorable niche that attracts new clients and retains established ones.

Understanding these differences can make your marketing efforts more efficient and effectively putting your business on the path to substantial growth.
